Commonplace Post 1

If her wrath you feel, we shall pity. Yet some who speak on her behalf, I fear just seek the golden calf. I t's true, we must treat her right. Or we will incur a deadly plight. Treat her with distinction Or surely face extinction! - Edith A. Phinazee  This quote from the poem "Mother Nature" by Edith A. Phinazee describes the environment as mother nature. I like seeing the environment be given the name Mother Nature because like a human mother, the environment will take care of you if you treat it with respect and admiration. Unlike most descriptions of mother nature, peaceful and calm, the author describes it as a strong and scary woman who will exterminate us all if we don't treat her with care. This description is one I feel humans might listen to more because it inscribes fear instead of pretending everything is okay. The effects of natural disasters is a devastating example of how we might feel the wrath of mother nature. If we want to stay on

A Great Combination

This piece of land lays right in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. The layout was designed by humans but only mother nature can take the credit for growing the plants. It shows both signs of the wild and of civilization.     You can see the man made features right away with the boardwalk and seating deck. It is very convenient for someone who might enjoy walking around or sitting down to observe and appreciate the environment. The natural qualities are a little more interesting and inviting. As if they were expecting you, the humble trees welcome you with open arms and the plants are always thrilled to have visitors. All flowers immediately become vibrant with excitement to get some attention. Gravel trails guide you throughout the park to experience it all of it from the sidelines. A closer experience is possible by going off the trail into the more forest-like path to get a near the trees. You can tell they have great relationships with each other they way they intertwine. I

Baby Watermelon

He runs. He runs and runs until his lungs give out on him and his legs can't take another step. He doesn't know where he's going but he knows he needs to get away. With his hands on his knees and his heart still beating fast, Cris picks his head up to find a sign with the words "Howdy Farm" on it. His mind steps into curious mode as he proceeds into this unfamiliar area. Still tired, he drags his feet against the gravel path taking it one step at a time. Cris never liked nature or anything outdoors but a little voice in his mind was telling him to go in. As soon an he looked around, he remembered exactly why he dislikes it. Everything in the farm was growing so effortlessly and carefree. Everything was full of purpose and was so stress free but life hasn't been this for Cris in a long time. The blushing flowers lived next to the stiff leaves in harmony.  The humble bumbles bees knew what their job was and they worked overtime all day. There were hardly any sig

An Incident

We sit down on the big bulky rocks by the water and he looks up at me with his eyes filled with hope as he says the words I regret to hear. "Will you be my girlfriend?" Danny asked. At that moment, I knew all my actions led to this moment and I have no one to blame but myself. My heart pounds uncontrollably and my palms are soaked in sweat not because of the Texas heat beating down on me but because I can't imagine a scenario in my head where any response I give will have a good outcome. "I can't," I tell him as I watch his face go from a bright smile to no expressions at all. He gets up and leaves without saying one word. I can feel myself start to breathe again as I focus solely on my surroundings. I know he picked this place to ask me because its where we first met. I remember the day like it was just yesterday.      The sun was rising and no clouds were in sight to block its way. I was taking my dog, Chico, on a walk to Research Park but it looked mo

Introduction

Hello!  My name is Lizbeth. I am proud to say I'm from the beautiful city of Houston, Tx. I love everything about Houston from the big parks to the tall buildings. My interest in the environment grows the more I explore different places. Hopefully, in the future I will have the opportunity to see all the beautiful places this world holds.  This blog is for my environmental literature class. I look forward to it because I believe nothing is more breathtaking than the beauty of nature. My favorite aspect of the environment is how the colors and air give you a calm feeling. Whenever I feel stressed out, I know a good run at the park can go a long way in making me feel more at ease.  I hope you enjoy my blog!
